And so begins our romance. Lucien starts out as a man only intent on revenge. Angelique as a woman who refuses to allow any man, however attractive he may be, to have power over her via her heart. Long does a beautiful job of showing us how their love develops as they open themselves up to each other and to the possibilities life offers. Watching Lucien evolve from a man only living for revenge to a man ready to forgive those who betrayed him and to live instead for a relationship with Angelique is heartwarming.
And Angelique also needs to learn to forgive, but to forgive herself, and not only to forgive but to admire her younger self and her ability to survive and even thrive. This is a lovely story. Not just because of the plot and the romance, but also because of Long's writing talents. Her humor, descriptive abilities, clever dialogue, and insight into the human condition make for just the kind of romance I like, full of feels and warmth.
Yep, I was like a pig in mud with this one.
Breathe with Me
When Lucien says things like, " I am yours and you are mine," I turn all gooey inside. Yes, I admit it. Sometimes I'm a hopeless romantic and lover of schmaltz. As long as JAL continues to produce romances like this one, I'll be reading them.

The proprietresses of The Grand Palace on the Thames refer to their boarding house as being "operatic," and it is. Minus the glorious music, of course. There is, however, grand passion, provided by Delilah Derring in the first book and Angelique Breedlove in this one. And there is even operatically overplayed comic relief similar to that in an opera, thanks to Dot, the feckless, clumsy maid, and socially inept Mr. Delacorte, who recites a ribald poem to the other lodgers.
I especially enjoyed the camaraderie among the women characters in the first book and missed it in this book, but marriage and success are breaking up the group, just as happens in real life. Long's excellent writing makes the book sparkle. She uses very apt and enjoyable word images such as "As he looked at the desk the memories crashed over him like slops dumped from an upper-story window" and a derelict property has a ballroom "currently decorated courtesy of spiders.
Sometimes when you are able to just sink into a book you want the sort of book that lets you just fall into a happy state and stay there for a while. Angel in a Devil's Arms is just that sort of book.
Devil May Cry 5: disposable exploding robot arms and frustrating camera controls | PC Gamer
The characters have endured pain in their past and both Angelique and Lucian are slow to trust, but the growing bond between the two of them was just beautifully done. I loved so much about this book. The writing was some of the best I've seen from JAL. I quit highlighting particularly witty or moving passages because I was highlighting a good bit of the page.
The back and forth between the two leads as well as the other inhabitants of the boarding house was simply outstanding.
There are no stock characters in this world. And it's a world with a little more grittiness and realism than is seen from a lot of popular authors writing Regency romance. When she needs to JAL can bring the sexual tension but the emotional build and trust between the two leads was just as powerful. This is my favorite in the series so far and it's hard to see how it will be surpassed. Thanks to Edelweiss for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. Angelique Breedlove is one of the co-owners of a boarding house down at the London docks.
HONOR. COURAGE. COMMITMENT.
The mysterious new boarder is Lucien, Lord Bolt, the illegitimate son of a Duke who 'died' ten years ago by drowning in the Thames. Despite her reservations, the two are drawn together. I love Ms. Long's writing. She can make me laugh out loud and then swoon at a steamy romantic love scene. Angelique and Lucien are appropriately cast as the hero and heroine, supported by the other boarders who we met, for the most part, in the first book of the series. Their interactions provide some of the best parts of the stories and make the reader long to sit with them in the best sitting-room, knitting while listening to another person read.
I did think the ending was a bit weak and wrapped up too conveniently, which is why I didn't give it 5 stars. We're the second book?! I need the next book! Short but sweet story i absolutely love it!!! Please don't stop here i would love to read more about these two. See both reviews.
